Basingstoke has a population of around 90,000 people in the council population of around hundred 150,000. Basingstoke has been growing since its designation as a London overspill town in 1961. In 1951 there were only about 16,000 inhabitants. The town has been a centre of commerce, since the Domesday book and was referred to as a market town in that book. The town is famous, with a large number of roundabouts. In the 1960s , Basingstoke town centre was completely rebuilt, and many historic buildings were replaced by large concrete shopping centres.
