Coventry has a city population of around 303,000, and is the ninth largest city in England and 11th largest in the UK. It is also a certain second-largest city, after Birmingham in the East Midlands by population, although both Nottingham and Leicester have larger urban areas. Coventry are situated 95 miles northwest of London and 90 miles east of Birmingham and is further in coast than any other city in Britain. Their football team Coventry City has won the FA Cup once, and the city has been Britain in Bloom winners once.
There are two universities in Coventry Warwick university founded in 1965 and Coventry University in 1992. They have been Britain in Bloom winners once. Coventry is traditionally seen as having been established around 1043 with the founding of a Benedictine abbey. In time a market was established at the abbey gates and the settlement expanded. The Coventry suffered severe bombing during the Civil War, and especially a massive German air strike on the 14th of November 1940, which destroyed much of the city centre and Coventry's historic cathedral. New pedestrianised shopping precinct and a new much celebrated cathedral were built in post-war years.
