Hartlepool has population of around 92,000. It is a north sea port in the north-east of England. Nearby towns include Newcastle upon Tyne, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Durham, Darlington, Stockton on Tees. The town was founded in the seventh century spring up around Hartlepool abbey. Historically the area was heavily industrialised with ironworks and shipyards and by 1913. 1243 ship-owning companies located in town. This made it a target during the First and Second World Wars. Throughout its history the town has been hit by unemployment, firstly between the two wars as heavy industries declined in the area, and then again in the 1980s, the new marina and heavy investment in the 1990s revived the town centre. Hartlepool nuclear power station also provides a good source of income and jobs to the town.
