Hull a population of around 300,000. It has one university, Hull University, founded in 1954. Hull is located on the north bank of the Humber estuary, near the Yorkshire coast it is 25 miles from the North Sea, on both sides of the River Hull at its junction with the Humber. Hull is unusual in that it is a British city without a cathedral. It suffered heavy damage during the Second World War and took a while to recover industrially. The hotel had prospered in the 16th and 17th century, and this period's wealth can still be seen in well preserved, historic buildings, including Wilberforce house (now a museum).
The economy of hull was built on the fishing industry, and although this is declined, it is still a busy port handling 13,000,000 tonnes of cargo per year. Hull also made use of the leisure industry by creating a marina from the old Humber Street block. It has to 270 berths for yachts and small sailing craft. Industry and the city is focused on the chemical and healthcare sectors. It is the local transport hub of East Riding and is a natural focus of retail shoppers. There are three large shopping centres, the Prospects Centre, Prince's Key, and St Stephen's.
