Nottingham has a population of just under 250,000 people, and received city status in 1897. The greater Nottingham conurbation, which includes extra areas such as Carlton, Gelding and West Bridgeford, along with the other areas of the suburbs, has a population of 666,358. In the19th-century lace-making was famous in Nottingham, while some lacemaking still goes on in the city is no longer about economic significance. Nottingham is well known as the scene of the famous Robin Hood story and Sherwood Forest.
