Perth sits on the banks of the River Teide in central Scotland. Prior to 1975 it was the county town of County Perthshire. As such it has given its name to several other places around the world, most notably Perth, Western Australia. Perth is popularly known as the fair city, although it is technically no longer a city. Perth has a population of 43,450. Traditionally, Perth was a centre for whisky distilleries, and although these have moved away now, th well e town remains a centre of doing business. New High-Tech industry and major services including insurance and banking have also come into the town. Some of the largest employers include Norwich union, the bank of Scotland and Scottish and Southern energy. The town centre features a pedestrianised high Street, incorporating a large variety of both independent and major retailers. The major shopping centre, St John's Shopping Centre, adds about 40 business units to the already diverse range on the many city streets. The Town Also Features a plethora of bars and restaurants.
