Pilates teachers help clients to change and improve their body strength and posture using a specific set of techniques and exercises.

What is the job about?

Pilates teachers teach people stretching and conditioning exercises based on the eight Pilates principles:

  • Relaxation
  • Coordination
  • Alignment
  • Stamina
  • Concentration
  • Centring
  • Breathing
  • Flowing movement.

Pilates teacher work either one to one or with small groups (between four and 12). They need to be able to:

  • Use their knowledge of Pilates and human anatomy to design exercise programs that suit the needs and abilities of each client
  • Teach both mat and equipment based Pilates
  • Understand how to break down exercises so that clients can establish good movement skills
  • Understand how to target problem areas.

Key Skills & Knowledge needed

Before becoming a Pilates teacher you will need experience in Pilates. In addition, many instructors also have experience of dance, movement or exercise.

As with all teaching, you will need to be comfortable with people, have lots of patience, and have a desire to help people improve their posture and body alignment.

Qualifications and experience needed

All Pilates teachers will need a good background in exercise, movement or physical therapy, and have been attending regular Pilates classes.

There are various organizations offering Pilates training - it is important to check the qualification they offer.

What other training and development could I do?

Further training is typically via a part-time teacher training diploma course, which will take 12 to 18 months to complete.

You can join REPs as a level 3 Pilates instructor with one of the following:

  • CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Teaching Mat Pilates
  • OCR Level 3 Certificate in Pilates
  • Body Control Pilates teaching qualifications

Salary and benefit expectations

There are no set rates for Pilates teachers - as many are self-employed, your income will depend on your experience, and reputation.
